If you want to quickly estimate competition for a product on Amazon in ~30 seconds
If you want to quickly estimate competition for a product on Amazon in ~30 seconds, many experienced sellers use a very simple review-count shortcut on the first page of search results. It’s not perfect, but it’s surprisingly effective. 🚀
30-Second Amazon Competition Check (Review Method)
Step 1: Search your product on Amazon
Type the main keyword (example: “garlic press”, “yoga mat”, etc.).
Step 2: Open the first page results
Look at the first 10 organic listings (ignore sponsored ones if possible).
Step 3: Count reviews of top 10 products
Note the number of reviews for each of the first 10 listings.
Example:
| Product | Reviews |
|---|---|
| #1 | 3,200 |
| #2 | 1,800 |
| #3 | 950 |
| #4 | 420 |
| #5 | 350 |
| #6 | 200 |
| #7 | 180 |
| #8 | 120 |
| #9 | 95 |
| #10 | 60 |
Step 4: Calculate the average reviews
Add them roughly and divide by 10.
Example:
(3200 + 1800 + 950 + 420 + 350 + 200 + 180 + 120 + 95 + 60) / 10 ≈ 737 reviews
Quick Interpretation
| Average Reviews | Competition Level |
|---|---|
| 0–100 | Very Low competition ✅ |
| 100–500 | Medium competition ⚠️ |
| 500–1000 | High competition ❌ |
| 1000+ | Very hard market 🚫 |
Why this works:
Products with thousands of reviews dominate ranking, making it difficult for new sellers to compete.
Extra 5-Second Trick (Most Sellers Miss) 👀
Look at how many listings have under 100 reviews on page 1.
If 3–5 products have <100 reviews, it means:
-
New sellers are entering
-
Ranking is still possible
If all listings have 1000+ reviews, it’s a very saturated market.
✅ Pro sellers combine this with tools like
-
Helium 10
-
Jungle Scout
-
Keepa
But the review shortcut works instantly without tools.
